Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome

Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome
Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder associated with Streptococcus

Both PANDAS and PANS are diseases of children and adolescents marked by obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorder symptoms that begins after a bacterial infection.  If the condition starts after a streptococcus infection, it is called PANDAS. PANS is associated with infection triggered autoimmune responses that attack normal body tissues by mistaking them for similar infectious agents.

An estimate of 160,000,000 children are affected in the U.S.

Typical Age of onset

Age 3-12

Note: The potential for strep reactions rapidly declines after age 12, but it is recognized that PANDAS could, although very unlikely, develop in adolescents. It is highly unlikely an adult would experience PANDAS symptoms for the first time, although it has not been studied.

Rapid onset of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and tic like symptoms following a strep infection.
