How do we address the increased prevalence of autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune diseases pose a significant health challenge and it is estimated that you or someone you know will develop an autoimmune disease at some point. Those who are greatly affected by autoimmune diseases are individuals with a genetic predisposition, who have been exposed to certain pollutants, and women, which comprise 70-80% of those diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

The impact of autoimmune diseases goes far beyond physical symptoms, encompassing chronic fatigue, pain, and depression, eventually leading to disrupted lives and in some cases, death. Unfortunately, the U.S. lacks a national registry for autoimmune diseases, which makes it difficult to accurately gauge the prevalence of autoimmune diseases. Estimates suggest millions are affected, with diagnoses on the rise globally.

Urgent action is needed to address the increased prevalence of these diseases. Autoimmune diseases are also among the most expensive diseases to treat. The U.S. is estimated to have spent over $100 billion a year to treat autoimmune diseases. Despite recent initiatives, like the establishment of an Office of Autoimmune Disease Research, there's still a need for greater coordination, funding, and standardization in research. The importance of a national registry is more apparent than ever to understand the full extent of the autoimmune problem.

To raise visibility for autoimmune diseases and show just how prevalent these diseases are, the Autoimmune Registry is preparing an Awareness campaign ahead of Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month in March. To add your voice and face to our campaign, please take a quick selfie and add your name HERE to join the other autoimmune disease patients supporting our cause. Help us spread the word on the need for a centralized registry and coordinated research.

To support the Autoimmune Registry, please join our registry or share it with a friend who has an autoimmune condition. Donations are also greatly appreciated!
