NIH announces a strategic plan for autoimmune disease research!
Despite the high prevalence of autoimmune diseases, research tends to be underfunded since most of the funding goes towards infectious diseases, heart disease, and cancer research. Unfortunately, the lack of studies on autoimmune diseases results in limited treatment options. To combat this predicament, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has created a strategic plan to accelerate the progress in autoimmune disease research by supporting research on preclinical autoimmunity, early diagnosis, and innovative therapies.
The NIH has already taken strides in autoimmune research by creating the Office of Autoimmune Disease Research (OADR) within the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH). Now, they have developed a 5-year plan that will run from 2026 through 2030 with the objective of:
Accelerating research in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and cure of autoimmune diseases.
Promoting research to improve the health of people living with and at risk for autoimmune diseases.
Supporting research to understand the full complexity of autoimmune diseases.
Building and maintaining capacity for autoimmune disease research.
Building and strengthening partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration across the autoimmune disease community.
Through these objectives, the NIH is hoping to develop an infrastructure that supports multimodal data-driven approaches for autoimmune disease research, promotes engagement and community of all populations within the autoimmune space, and makes use of technologies to advance autoimmune research.
To support the Autoimmune Registry, please share our information with others who have autoimmune diseases. Donations are also greatly appreciated!
