Maria Morais is a liver transplant warrior who received a living liver from her donor friend in 2021 at the UHN Ajmera Transplant Program Toronto General Hospital, after suffering from a rare autoimmune liver disease known as primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). She is a registered nurse, experienced in the area of public health and chronic disease prevention.
Having been through such a life-changing journey, Maria now joins others as a patient mentor, partner and advocate, bringing awareness and hope to issues of rare liver disease, organ donation, and transplantation by sharing her lived experience locally and world-wide through participating in global health care forums, research projects and patient advocacy groups through her role as VP of Patient Advocacy with the Canadian PBC Society to help improve the overall quality of life for patients dealing with rare liver disease.
