List

This is a list of autoimmune diseases, comorbidities, and syndromes as compiled by ARI.  To appear on this list, we check scientific medical sources at the National Library of Medicine (also known as "PubMed").  If a disease has no known cause and is suspected of being autoimmune, we include it because we need more research to determine whether it is, or is not, an autoimmune disease. We update the list regularly based on feedback we get from citizen scientists like you and our own research.

NOTE: The information provided here intended to facilitate and encourage, not replace, direct patient-health professional relationships.

Almost every autoimmune disease has more than one name. In some cases, the name is a simple synonym or abbreviation (“lupus” for systemic lupus erythematosus). In some, the alternative name is actually a subtype. A subtype is a more specific clinical definition of the main disease. These specific definitions can be used to identify patients that may be good candidates for specific treatments. For example, “Steroid responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT)” is diagnosed when a patient with Hashimoto’s encephalopathy responds well to steroids. The disease subtype is therefore clinically relevant to patients, but the information in the disease profile is still substantially accurate.
