Dermatitis herpetiformis is a chronic, blistering, and intensely itchy rash, It is occurs in people who are suffering from celiac disease who consume gluten. It is affects about 10 percent of those with celiac disease, and usually affects male adults between 30 and 40 and is more common in people of northern European descent. DH is rarely found in those of African and Asian ancestry.

Prevalence

US Cases: 24,000 - 35,000 [Salmi 2011] but could be as high as 240,000 [Shields 2020]. As awareness and control of celiac disease has improved, the number of cases of DH has been decreasing.

Typical Age of onset

30 to 40 years old.

Symptoms

  • bumpy red rash on the buttocks, arms and legs
