Description

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is a rare blood disorder caused when a protein is missing from a person’s blood due to a mutation in a gene. Without the protein, the body’s immune system attacks the red blood cells and breaks them apart.

Symptoms

  • Dark or tea colored urine

  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Trouble breathing when you exercise

  • Irregular heartbeat

  • Muscle spasms

  • Pain in your belly

  • Spasms in your throat that can make it hard to swallow

  • Erectile dysfunction
